If there is one color that was a major trend this fall on the runway, it’s oxblood. A dark, rich, moody, wine-red color that evokes power, drama, and allure and seen on the likes of Gucci, Ferragamo, Hermes, and Erdem. While the regal shade draws naturally to formal and evening looks, it makes a surprising pop of color in accessories like glasses.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, vivid red sunglasses were a summer staple, whether they had playful tinted lenses or candy apple red frames. High-gloss frames were a light and bright summer staple. While the color of the year may be peach fuzz, red will continue to be a prevalent color story in 2024 and beyond.

The science behind red

Red may not be the most visible color, but it is the best at attracting attention. Stop signs, fire engines, flashing lights, and stop lights are all perfect examples that red often serves as a “watch out.” In fact, red has been shown to capture and hold attention in emotional situations over other colors as well.

Studies have found that our bodies have a physiological effect on the color red. It’s explicitly associated with terms like stimulating and exciting and increases the speed and force of our physical responses.

Exposure to red light increases blood pressure, eye blinking, and respiratory rate in what psychologies refer to as a measure of excitement. When we are in this state, we are alert and more attuned to our senses. Because of these physiological reactions in our bodies, multiple studies have shown that wearing red makes both women and men more attractive.

Unexpected red theory

Flooding social media this year, the unexpected red theory basically says adding any amount of red to a room or outfit where makes it look more pulled together. Since the theory has gone viral, countless videos show aspirational images of homes and outfits that feature this “pop of red.” Adding a bit of red to your outfit has never been easier than with red sunglasses or eyeglass frames.

How to wear It

Wearing red can be striking and bold, but the key to pulling it off lies in balancing the intensity of the color with complementary shades. For a classic look, pair red with neutrals like white, black, or gray to allow the red frames to be the focal point of the outfit.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try combining red with earthy tones like camel, tan, or olive green for a sophisticated, understated vibe. For a fashion-forward approach, consider pairing red with muted pastels like blush pink or powder blue, creating a soft contrast and putting that “unexpected red theory” to the test.

If you’d really like to take red frames to the next level, an all red outfit will be an attention-grabbing look and effortless in monochromatic style.
