As you approach the new year, it’s time of year to assess your personal style and to purge anything that no longer fits the bill. In this article, we evaluate what trends we look forward to and consider a few that may have overstayed their welcome.

Statement rims are in

Statement rims and playful glasses often return to style when a jovial edge needs to be reinvigorated into fashion, and it’s clear 2025 will be the time to get playful.

You may be all for practical and minimal eyewear, but sometimes it simply feels good to bring the drama. I’m all in on statement sunglasses in 2025. So if it’s time to leave your tried-and-true frames tucked in your drawer, go with shades to take your look to the next level.

We saw a variety of bold and chunky frames on the runway this year with Ulla Johnson presenting frames in green, purple, pink, and taupe down the runway, each with an oversized and whimsical flair, while Prada went for a more editorial take. Prada sent cartoonishly large bug-eyed frames down the runways, alongside other quirky iterations.

Hot stuff: yellow-tinted lenses

Colorful frames have run the gamut across the trend cycle in the previous years. But if they’re feeling kind of “been there; done that” to you, try something like this…

Nostalgia for the ‘70s is hardly new in fashion, but returning to the retro flair of yellow-tinted lenses feels like a fresh take for 2025.

The instant cool factor it adds to outfits does not go unnoticed and brands like Tory Burch and Bottega Veneta are trying out different iterations and shapes for this trusty trend. Bonus: yellow lenses are as practical as they are stylish, creating contrast, reducing glares, and improving visibility when you’re outside.

Oversized glam vs. super slim

Slim silhouettes were a staple of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s and have continued to appear in trend forecasts. From the ultra-thin frames of 2017 a la Rihanna, this minimalist chic made a great run (and may continue to), but next year’s chuncky counterpart feels a bit fresher.

Is futuristic a thing of the past?

High-shine metallic in sharp silhouettes have been heavily featured by some of the most beloved brands in recent years. However, shield-style frames, bug-eyed oversized silhouettes, and other “out-of-the-box frames” fit a certain type of aesthetic, you may be interested in moving on…

While some trends push us to make statements with adornments, drama, and embellishments, sometimes it’s best to keep it practical. Athletic and utilitarian frames dominated the runway in 2025 and I’m taking that as a cue to up the practicality in 2025.

Metal may meet the moment

Long are the days of acetate-chunky aviators taking over our Instagram feeds.

While you may appreciate the versatile look of acetate, chunky aviators, you may be ready for something different. If 2025 runways are any indication, tried-and-true metals are back in a big way.

Armani sent many male models down their runways in strong metal frames in round and rectangular shapes and women too will continue to see understated metal on the rise for a fresher sartorial look in the new year.
