Every December Pantone announces a color for the upcoming year. Not only is the color meant to be a prediction for trending palettes, but the hue also reflects what is happening in the world around us.
After a year of chaos and upheaval in 2020, they started the next year by announcing Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a marriage of gray and sunshine yellow to convey the message of strength and hopefulness that feels enduring and uplifting.
Jump to 2023, and we get what Pantone called “An unconventional shade for an unconventional time.”
Pantone’s Color of The Year, Viva Magenta, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. (Source)
In a year where conversations around artificial intelligence are omnipresent, it’s no surprise that this is also 2023’s Pantone Color of the Year. The shade itself was selected by human trend prognosticators who survey fashion, then interpreted by the A.I. tool to create a new ecosystem to be explored, aptly named “the Magentaverse.” Pantone also released various images of this make-believe world, of course dripping in the vivid magenta hue.
